It's Great to be a Horse Town!
There is no place on earth quite like Camden, a small town bursting at the seams with things to do and people to meet, still operating on 'Camden time'. Horses, a common thread for generations, touch people's lives directly and indirectly. The equine industry continues to provide jobs and opportunities for our area.
Camden, South Carolina's oldest inland city, has been a hub for horsemen for decades with Thoroughbred racing, fox hunting and much more. Home to the National Steeplechase Museum, Springdale Race Course and The Camden Training Center, Camden is a traditional destination for thoroughbred trainers seeking what are arguably the best training facilities in the country. Hundreds of horses winter here, preparing for a career as race horses. Hall of Fame trainers Jonathan Sheppard and Janet Elliot along with Kip Elser's Kirkwood Stables, have long established connections to Camden, as well as many others.
The Camden Hunt, established in 1926, continues to enjoy rigorous fox hunting on the privately owned 12,000 acre hunt country. Landowners graciously make this possible and in turn The Camden Hunt is responsible for the use and maintenance of this private property.
The South Carolina Equine Park makes an enormous impact on our local, county and state economy. State of the art footing by world renowned equine facility architects and the Park's central location to I-20, I-95, I-26 and I-77, make it an easy show destination. Open year round to all breeds and disciplines, with most events free to the public.
